We understand that for you to stay committed, Pr+ has to be delicious. All without a load of calories, while conforming to a heart healthy diet to be the best protein powder.

  • Only 130 - 135 calories, so you can easily add protein any time of day, not just after workouts. By using non-caloric natural sweeteners, we only needed 3 grams of organic cane sugar for a balanced taste. Reb A is a natural sweetener derived from Stevia, and doesn't have the typical stevia aftertaste.
  • No fat in whey protein isolate. We added 1 gram of MCT (medium-chain triglycerides); just enough for a smooth texture, and is one of the "good fats".
  • Low in sodium, naturally.
  • Lactose free, gluten free. Whey concentrates contain around 2% lactose, not so with whey protein isolates, with levels < 0.5%.

How To Use
Mix one level scoop (serving) in 6 – 8 oz. of cold water or alkaline beverage such as milk. Use more liquid for a milder taste, or thinner consistency. Take one serving daily, or more if your daily protein requirements aren't met by your diet.

For Recovery:
Take one serving immediately (within 30 minutes) after exercise.  Combine with additional carbohydrates if possible.  Adding carbs enhances replenishment of muscle glycogen stores as well as muscle protein synthesis.

Combine Pr+ with fruit (e.g. 1 banana and 1 cup of berries) and 1 cup of milk or soy milk in a "smoothie" for a well-balanced recovery drink. Alternatively, consume fruit or fruit juice in addition to Pr+. The ideal amount of carbohydrate depends on the length and intensity of your workout, and body size.  In general, this will be about 60 – 120 grams of carbs initially.  You may need to continue eating more carbohydrates for an extended period if you have had a glycogen depleting training session.  See our section on Nutrient Timing for more information.

For Protein Supplementation:
Good health ideally begins with a well-balanced diet. However, you may find a protein supplement is a convenient and healthy way to get the protein you need to augment your normal diet.

What is “rBGH-free”, “rBST-free”, or “Hormone-Free” Whey?

In the 1980’s, drug companies began selling “recombinant bovine growth hormone”, or rBGH, to dairy farmers for injection into their dairy cattle to stimulate increased milk production. This hormone is also called recombinant bovine somatotropin, or rBST.  Milk sourced from untreated dairy herds is used in producing rBGH-free whey, as part of the cheese-making process.  Since milk from many farmers is pooled in whey production, getting entire lots from untreated cows can be difficult. 


Why do we choose rBGH-free whey for our products?

After considerable research regarding safety, the FDA approved its use in 1993. Several professional and regulatory bodies independently determined there was no significant human health risk.  While very little of the hormone transfers from the cow into its milk, other potential hazards for human health may exist. In contrast to the United States, all 27 countries of the European Union, Canada, Japan, Australia and New Zealand have banned its use in dairy herds. However, their primary objection is the harmful impact on animal health; notably, an increase in mastitis by 25%, lameness by 55%, infertility by 40%, and reduced lifespan of treated cows from “culling”. Although it remains in common use in the United States, market pressures are resulting in more farmers reducing or eliminating this practice.  Hormone-free whey typically commands a premium price and often is in short supply. 


What Are the Potential Human Health Risks from rBGH Dairy Products?

Chronic IGF-1 Exposure:
The hormone, insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1), is increased in treated cows. IGF-1 is transferred into milk, and thus into the human food supply.  Bovine IGF-1 is identical to human IGF-1; thus, unlike rBGH, it will have physiologic effects if absorbed after ingestion.  In treated herds, the levels of IGF-1 are increased between 25 – 70% overall, and 2- to 5-fold in individual animals. Because cows are typically treated with rBGH during the mid- and late-lactation cycle, the final concentration varies widely depending on the blend from various cows and herds. While the levels found in dairy milk from treated herds are generally in the same range found in human breast milk, variability of milk levels can far exceed that. In the case of bovine colostrum, IGF-1 can reach levels 100 times greater than the average; in addition, bovine colostrum contains a shortened form of IGF-1 that has 10 times the biologic potency.  Even though it comprises only about 3% of the total in milk on average, the increased bioactivity of this IGF-1 variant may play a role in unwanted physiologic effects such as tumor development.


Some have argued that the relatively poor bioavailability (9.3%) precludes it having biologic effects in humans.  Yet, in the presence of casein, its absorption is increased by 67% in rats, and physiologic effects are observed. There is good evidence that IGF-1 reaches receptors throughout the human gut in biologically active form where it plays an important developmental role in neonates during exposure to high levels in breast milk during early lactation.  However, later in life chronic exposure to IGF-1 may contribute to tumor development. It promotes growth in cancer cells, specifically for human breast, prostate, and colon cancer, which have also been confirmed in epidemiologic studies. Due to the diverse biological effects attributable to IGF-1, defining a dose-effect relationship is virtually impossible, and thus establishing what may be considered a “safe” level for chronic human consumption. What was good for the baby isn’t necessarily good for the adult. 


Potentially Increased Antibiotic Exposure: The increased incidence of mastitis in treated cows results in increased use of antibiotic treatment. Many antibiotics are secreted into milk, resulting in human consumption, albeit at low levels.  Chronic exposure to antibiotics can contribute to subsequent selection of resistant bacteria and thereby increased human health risks.  There is also some risk of development of allergies and allergic reactions to antibiotic exposure. 


Other Unknowns

There are other changes in milk protein composition resulting from rBGH treatment that may favor human allergic reactions.  We also don’t know the potential biologic activity and possible risks associated with rBGH that is ingested and hydrolyzed in our stomachs. Even though rBGH will not make its way into our bodies intact, we don’t yet know the potential effects the cleavage products of digestion may ultimately have on us. 



The effects of rBGH/rBST injections on dairy cattle clearly increase their health risk and form the basis for a ban on its use in a significant portion of the Western world. While there appears to be little risk from rBGH itself, increased levels of IGF-I with its potential effects on tumor development, increased exposure to antibiotic residues in milk, and potential development of antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains raise sufficient concerns for human health.


We have chosen to obtain rBGH-free whey for our products, which can be challenging given its continued use in the United States and the relative short supply of whey protein in the world market.  Although significantly more expensive, we consider rBGH-free whey a worthwhile value for animal protection and lowered risk for human health. As the public becomes more aware of these risks, we believe they will request products that are rBGH-free. We hope you will join us by only purchasing rBGH-free products.
