Nutrient Timing for Endurance Athletes

Optimizing Protein Intake for Improving Muscle Mass and Body Composition

Dr. Matthew Cooke, Ph.D.

The interaction between exercise training-induced responses and nutrient availability has long been recognized [1]. While contraction-induced adaptations are determined largely by the mode of exercise and the volume, intensity, and frequency of the training stimulus; evidence is accumulating that the timing of nutrient availability around an exercise session serves as a potent modulator of many acute responses and chronic adaptations to exercise [2]. Regardless of whether an athlete is endurance, strength and/or power focused, the available literature to date seems to indicate that nutrient timing exerts a profound effect on resting metabolism and fuel utilization during exercise, exercise capacity, acute regulatory events underlying cell signaling and gene expression and many processes involved in training adaptation, particularly increasing lean muscle mass.
